CV Advice

A well written Curriculum Vitae (CV) is essential when applying for a new role. Your CV should be treated as a “sales tool” or “shop window” to demonstrate your qualifications, skills and experience.

It’s worth the investment in time to get it right as it will give you the best possible chance to sell you to the employer. The way in which a CV is written and presented can be the difference between success and failure.

  1. Format  – Your CV should be clear, easy to read, neat, and tidy. Use sub headings, bold letters and bullet points to give clarity and put emphasis on certain information. You should aim to keep your CV to a maximum of 3 or 4 pages long.
  2. Structure – One thing to bear in mind when creating your CV is to document both your education and work experience in reverse chronological order (i.e. your most recent first).  Employers typically scan over a CV first without going into great detail.  To have the greatest impact it is advisable to follow this structure when entering your details and skills.
  3. Proof Read – Ask a friend or relative to read through your CV to make sure it’s accurate, free from spelling and grammatical errors and demonstrates your skills in a positive way. If you can, try printing the CV to ensure it looks as you would expect it to. 

You must remember that first impressions really do count, and your CV is normally the first impression a prospective employer will have of you.
